The Parliament has sent back the MVR 6 billion Supplementary Budget proposed by the Finance Ministry as the Budget does not comply with all the legal requirements stipulated in the Public Finance Act.
The Finance Ministry announced the MVR 6 billion Supplementary Budget last Wednesday as the government looks to shore up its finances. The Supplementary budget would take the total state budget for the year 2023 to a whopping MVR 49.4 billion.
While the Finance Ministry has been instructed to amend and resubmit the proposed Supplementary budget, Communications Director at the Parliament Hassan Ziyau said that the Parliament asked the Finance Ministry to send the details before.
But he said that while the Finance Ministry sent in the proposed Supplementary Budget again, it had not included details of all the legal requirements stated in the Public Finance Act.
Ziyau further said that in a letter signed by the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, the legislative house has instructed the Finance Ministry to re-submit the Supplementary Budget with all the details.
The proposed Supplementary Budget was sent back to the Ministry after Parliament Minority Leader MP for Central Henveiru Constituency Ali Azim accused the government of failing to comply with the requirements of the law when compiling the Supplementary Budget it has submitted to the Parliament.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Parliament, MP Azim said that the Budget did not include State expenditure and income details for the last financial year and also the details of the program budgets from government offices.
