Maldives National Defence Force MNDF has provided assistance in draining the water after the flooding in Alifu Alifu Feridhoo due to heavy rains in the region.
The MNDF Malé Area Command and Malé Fire Station personnel rushed to the island after receiving information that some roads on the island were flooded due to heavy rains.
Water drainage equipment and sandbags have been used to prevent water from entering the houses. Three areas were flooded and pumps were used to drain the water.
The flooded roads have been drained and some houses have been flooded. Sand has been placed near eight houses and 60 sandbags have been installed near four houses, he said.
The Island Council told The Press that some houses were affected but no major damage was reported. The council also noted that safety measures were taken before the water entered the houses and shops. The flooding in the island was mainly caused by the digging of a trench for the construction of sewerage.
The weather bureau is forecasting rain in parts of the country today. The weather forecast for the north and central parts of the country is expected to be affected by heavy showers and thunderstorms.
