Incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says the Maldives remains in solidarity with the Palestinian people as the military escalation in Gaza and the occupied territories intensified with hundreds of deaths.
His affirmation came with Israel and Hamas once again locked in a new cycle of escalating violence, after a surprise attack on Saturday involving aerial, sea, and ground operations, initiated by the Palestinian group from the Gaza Strip. Israel has responded with a deadly bombardment of the blockaded coastal enclave.
More than 200 Palestinians have died including 20 children while the Israeli death toll reached 100 yesterday.
While many Western leaders said that they would stand by Israel's right to defend itself, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said in a social media post that Maldives remains in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to dignity and self-determination.
He said that the Maldives condemned Israel’s disproportionate use of force on defenseless Palestinian communities and renewed its call for a two-state solution that ensures peace for all.
Yesterday, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu called for the end of Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands.
He said via 'X' that Israel should end the illegal occupation of Palestine immediately and return the lands forcefully seized from Palestinians.
He also said that Israel should recognize Palestine as an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital within 1967 borders and allow the immediate return of refugees.
