President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says Maldives Airports Company limited staff working on the Apron of Velaana International Airport (VIA) would be given a risk allowance starting next month.

Speaking at a campaign event, President Solih said that the risk allowance would be issued starting the 1st of next month. He said that those working on the Apron of VIA were putting themselves at risk and hence the government allocated a special allowance for them.

The allowance to Apron staff follows the recent decision to issue 50 percent of the salary of MACL staff in USD.

The decision was made by the MACL board after it had stopped issuing 50 percent of the salaries of the MACL staff in USD during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company has also resumed issuing an annual bonus to staff after a 2-year gap due to the pandemic with each staff receiving MVR 25,000.

MACL is a company that operates the main airport in the country and employees around 4,000 staff.
