Police say they have detained 6 individuals due to various election-related incidents as the Maldives vote to elect their next President today.

Police said that four out of these 6 individuals have now been released. Police said that the remaining two are still under police custody and that they are further investigating the circumstances of their arrest.

However, they did not give the details of where the individuals were arrested.

The police assured that they would be active in and around all ballot boxes to ensure that voting is finished smoothly across the country.

Earlier, the Elections Commission said that it had submitted an incident at a ballot box placed at Baa Atoll Thulhaadhoo to the police.

The Commission said that a voter was alleged to have taken a picture of the ballot paper using a digital pen.

It said that though the voter would be allowed to cast the vote in the ballot box since the act of taking a picture of the ballot paper was illegal, the incident had now been brought to the attention of the Police.

Voting for the election is expected to conclude at 04:00 p.m.
