Police have today arrested an individual who attempted to jump from the Sina Male' Bridge that connects Male' with Hulhumale' and Hulhule.
The individual has been identified as a 37-year-old Indian man.
The man has now been remanded in police custody for another 15 days. Court documents relating to the man's arrest show that the man was living in the Maldives illegally.
The court documents also revealed that the man had criminal records of drug-related offenses and that he attempted to jump from the bridge because he could not get treatment for his addiction and felt hopeless.
Court documents said that the Police admitted in court that they were pondering whether or not to deport the offender.
The Sina Male Bridge, used by many for their daily commute, has been used by jumpers in previous occasions including locals and foreigners.
