Health Protection Agency HPA reports that more than 10,000 people were treated for diarrhea last month in the Maldives.
In its monthly report for communicable illnesses in the country, HPA noted that a total of 10,447 individuals were treated for diarrhea in the month of August.
HPA said that this was 3,063 cases more than the previous month as only 7,384 people were treated for illness in July.
The figures for July and August 2023 remain high compared to that for July and August 2022.
HPA statistics showed that only 6,723 individuals were treated for diarrhea in July and August of 2022.
Meanwhile, HPA said that Dengue fever cases have also soared in the country last month compared to the previous month. HPA said that a total of 323 individuals were treated for the viral infection spread by mosquitos in August.
HPA said that this was 52 cases more than that treated in July as a total of 271 individuals were treated for the illness that month.
The Agency also indicated that Dengue cases in August 2023 were higher than in August 2022 as only 250 cases were reported last year.
HPA further said that common cold and Influenza cases have also increased last month compared to that of July.
It said that a total of 28,680 individuals were treated for Common Cold in August while this figure was at 23,206 in July 2023.
As for Influenza cases, HPA said that out of the 253 individuals tested for the illness in August, 59 tested positive for the illness. In July, 50 out of the 213 sampled for Influenza tested positive for the illness.
HPA urged the public to take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of these highly infectious diseases except for Dengue Fever which is spread by mosquitos.
