MDP Presidential Campaign Spokesperson Defense Minister Maria Ahmed Didi confirms that MDP Candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will take part in the official Presidential Debate scheduled ahead of next month's election.
The official debate organized by State Media PSM and the Maldives National University is scheduled to be held on the 1st of next month. Invitation has been sent to all 8 candidates contesting in the September 9th Presidential Election.
Up until yesterday, all but President Solih confirmed their participation in the debate which attracted heavy criticism from his opponents.
The President's camp maintained that he gives more priority to listening to the concerns of the people which meant that he wished to continue his campaign trips to inner atolls.
Speaking at her regular news briefing today, Minister Maria confirmed that President Solih would take part in the MNU-PSM Presidential Debate. She said that the MNU debate would be an academic debate in which the focus would be on policies.
Minister Maria said that the President did not believe in appearing in debates just to promote one's self and that he would not take part in any debates organized by private media stations.
She added that the President would rather travel to the islands to meet with the people.
The debate scheduled for next Friday would allow the voters to hear the policies an visions of all the candidates taking part in the election from one stage and also see them answer questions from the public.
