MP for Fonadhoo Constituency Moosa Siraj leaves the ruling Maldives Democratic Party MDP.

MP Siraj, who is a lawyer by profession, was elected to the seat by competing for MDP back in the 2019 Parliamentary elections.

In his letter to the Chairperson of MDP Fayyaz Ismail, MP Siraj said that he did not wish to stay on with MDP any longer.

He requested that his name be removed from the party registry.

His decision to leave MDP comes amid rumors that he is set to join the main opposition party PPM in the coming days. But this has not been confirmed by him or PPM.

MP Siraj was rumored to leave MDP in January of this year during the dispute that divided the party but he later sided with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who eventually won the party candidacy.

Several MPs from MDP have left the party this year with the most notable departure coming in the form of its then President and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed has since joined the newly formed The Democrats.
