Vice President of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb says attacks against Presidential Candidates are uncivil and should be stopped at once.
This comes after Independent Candidate former Home Minister Umar Naseer was attacked while participating in a road rally in Hulhumale'. Also, unrest was reported in Kaafu Guraidhoo between MDP supporters and PPM/PNC supporters in relation to PNC Presidential Candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's campaign trip to the island.
One man was arrested due to the incident which police say they are investigating.
Commenting about the incident, Vice President of the Elections Commission Habeeb said that from the day the Commission publically announces the names of the Presidential Candidates till the day the newly elected President is sworn in, the Government must provide security details for all the candidates and their running mates and that this was stipulated in the law.
Habeeb said endangering the safety of any candidate or any running mate is deemed a crime. He said that the Elections Commission calls on the members of the security services to stop any such risks to the candidates and their running mates.
He urged the public not to take part in such uncivilized acts.
The Vice President of the Electoral Watchdog also called on the Police to expedite the investigation of the attack against candidate Umar Naseer and to bring those responsible in front of justice.
Habeeb said that the Commission is highly concerned with what transpired in Guraidhoo and urged all to refrain from such unlawful behaviour.
