PPM Leader and former President Abdullah Yameen endorses the candidacy of PNC candidate Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
This came after a day of turmoil within the ranks of the opposition coalition after Yameen gave a directive to the joint senate of PPM/PNC to boycott the Presidential Elections after the Supreme Court dashed any hopes the jailed ex-President had of competing in the election.
But the senate decided against boycotting the election and local media reported that Yameen ordered a boycott despite the opposition from the joint senate.
However, PNC Candidate Mohamed Muizzu filed his candidacy earlier this morning as PNC Leader Abdul Rahman Abdullah and the Mayor's running mate MP Hussain Latheef accompanied him.
Shortly afterward, the Secretary General of PPM Ahmed Tholaal said to the media that Yameen has decided to back the candidacy of Muizzu.
Tholaal said that Yameen changed his stance after considering the recommendations of the joint senate, the wishes of the supporters of the opposition coalition, and thousand of Maldivians who want to see the opposition field a candidate in the election.
Members of the PPM Leadership have now backed the PNC duo for the Presidency including former Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and MP for Guraidhoo Constituency Ghassan Maumoon.
