The main opposition party PPM's sister party People's National Congress PNC has decided to field a candidate of their own to compete in the Presidential Elections scheduled for September.
The decision to field a candidate was made at a senate meeting today with votes from 44 senators out of 47 who took part in the meeting.
PNC then proceeded to invite party members to put forth their names if they want to represent the party in the Presidential Elections and set a deadline of 2 pm for the application.
The Party said just now that only MP for Maduvaree Constituency Adam Shareef Umar and Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Miuzz put forth their names before the deadline.
Mayor Muizzu formerly from PPM, joined PNC today in his bid to become the party's Presidential candidate.
While PNC formed a coalition with PPM back in 2019, PPM fielded their own candidate for the election but its candidate and former President Abdullah Yameen remains jailed serving an 11-year sentence for money laundering and bribery.
Though PPM submitted Yameen's candidacy form to the Elections Commission earlier this week, it was rejected on constitutional grounds.
PPM had since submitted the case to the Supreme Court and the Court will hold its first hearing on the case tomorrow afternoon.
