The Opposition Coalition's presidential candidate former President Abdullah Yameen appoints his former Vice President Dr.Mohamed Jameel Ahmed as his running mate for the September Presidential Elections.

Yameen is the first presidential candidate to announce his running mate ahead of the elections.

Jameel was Yameen's running back in 2013 when he last won the election and came into power. Jameel was sworn in as the Vice President but was later removed from his post in 2015 after the then-parliament voted against him in a no-confidence motion.

It was believed that then-Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb orchestrated Jameel's removal and was late appointed Vice President himself.

Jameel then left for the United Kingdom and worked against Yameen in the last election.

Later on, Jameel returned to the Maldives and joined the Jumhooree party and competed for a seat in the 2019 parliamentary election for the party. But he lost the elections and then re-joined PPM after Yameen was jailed in relation to the MMPRC scandal.

Jameel joined Yameen's legal team and was later appointed as the head of the legal team.

Many within the PPM leadership are offering their congratulations to Jameel for being chosen as Yameen's running mate and commended Yameen for his choice.

The Maldives would choose its next President in the elections on 9th September.
