MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail says he has no interest in becoming the running mate of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the September Presidential Elections.

He made these comments as reports spread that Fayyaz would be chosen as the running mate for President's re-election.

Responding to these comments, Fayyaz, who is also the Economic Minister, said that he had no interest in becoming the running mate. He further said that for some reason, former MDP Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik was spreading this misinformation. Fayyaz added that he found this upsetting.

This came as President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih indicated yesterday that he was willing to choose his running mate from within the coalition.

President Solih said that the biggest headache he had right now was on who to choose as his running mate and that the decision must be made soon.

He stated that he has been discussing the matter with party leaders and that they are focused on making a decision soon.

President revealed that he has been receiving many names to choose as a running mate and that he would decide before submitting the Candidate Application Form to the Elections Commission later this month.

Political parties who made the coalition with MDP for the September Election, Adhaalath and MDA are actively taking part in President Solih's campaign trips.

Vice President Faisal Naseem is also taking part in the campaign trips but the Vice President is from JP who had announced that it would not remain in a coalition with MDP for the next election.
