MP for Maduvaree Constituency Adam Shareef Umar says the biggest challenge for the opposition PPM is the government exerting its influence on the judiciary and delaying opposition candidate Abdullah Yameen's appeal case.

He said this in response to comments made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in which he said the biggest challenge to the MDP coalition is PPM and that MPD and PPM would be the biggest competitors in the upcoming election.

His comments discounted The Democrats, the breakaway party formed from MDP with its former President Mohamed Nasheed now in its ranks.

In response, Opposition MP Shareef said that the division of MDP and the creation of the Democrats have made it easier for the opposition to defeat President Solih.

He went on to call on the government to delay the elections by two weeks or until the verdict on the appeal case of former President Yameen at the High Court following his conviction by the Criminal Court last year.

Shareef insisted that Yameen too has a right to compete in the elections.

Yameen is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence for money laundering and accepting bribe charges.
