Maldives Correctional Services says former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been given permission to go abroad for medical reasons.

This came as local media reported that Adeeb, who is serving a 20-year jail sentence, has been granted permission to go abroad.

Correctional Services said via Twitter that permission was granted to Adeeb to go abroad for medical purposes as he must do diagnostic tests that are not available in the Maldives.

It said that the permission was given upon the recommendation of the Medical Board.

Correctional Services further said that it along with Maldives Police Services would continue to monitor the former Vice President while he is abroad. It did not give details on where Adeeb would be traveling and when he would be departing.

Adeeb was recently admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital Emergency Services and his party Maldives Third-way Democrats MTD stated that Adeeb is suffering from a serious and life-threatening medical condition related to neurology.

It further said that this diagnosis was made after his prolonged period of being locked up in solitary confinement from 2015 to 2018 in a cell locked for 24 hours for three years, against all International conversations and Maldivian laws that classify such treatment as inhumane.
