Police confirm an individual who went swimming in Hulhudhoo of Addu City has been found dead.
They said that the individual was found around 11:48 am this morning after a search was underway as the person was reported missing and that the person was found in the waters.
Police cited the island's health center to report that the individual was declared dead on arrival at the center and that the deceased has been identified as a 78-year-old woman.
Police added that they were further investigating the incident.
Drowning incidents have grown common in the Maldives. Last month a tourist drowned while swimming in the sea on the same day a child drowned in an indoor pool on a resort.
