The Elections Commission (EC) of the Madives is working to achieve a political goal and criticize of circulating miss information about membership of Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), said its leadership.

MRM has said EC did not consider the 140 forms submitted by them to make its membership total to 3000. MRM accused EC deliberately holding the forms without processing. Also said, that the EC actions towards MRM shows the incompetence of the EC and its inability to work free from political influence.

They also accused EC of reducing its member’s registry and avoiding to enroll submitted forms for the last two months.

On the other hand the EC says the forms submitted by MRM was screened and found many invalid forms thus the required number for a political party does not reach. EC considers any party with less than 3000 in membership is eligible for dissolving.

EC also says that, despite the forms submitted many members have requested to leave MRM and total number of the existing membership only reaches to 2892.

Of this fact EC passed a vote in favor of dissolving MRM on May 24, where MRM challenged the decision in the Civil Court.

The Civil Court has issued an order not to implement of the decision to dissolve the MRM. The Civil Court ruled that there was no place to change the order when the EC moved for review.

MRM says, EC is constantly trying to dissolve the party and it violates of the law, which they raises questions about the fairness and independence of the EC. The party has called on EC Chairman Fuad Taufiq to reform the EC as an independent institution free from political influence and without discrimination in accordance with the Political Parties Act.
