The organization advocating for equal social housing, The Commoners has kicked off discussions on stopping the rent payments for all social housing as a way to protest the government's decision to give free land plots under its Gedhoruveriya housing scheme.

The Commoners said that yesterday it held the first discussion of the matter and that flat owners of Hiya Tower H4 participated in the discussions. It said that it would announce its decision on the matter after holding these discussions with the owners of the flats.

The government released the preliminary list of land plot recipients for the 'Binveriya' Housing Scheme last Monday.

The list includes 10,314 recipients, including people who applied jointly and as separate individuals who would receive land plots under the scheme. The public can raise complaints or inquiries about the list from today until July 15, 2023, through the 'Gedhoruverin Portal.'

The scheme is the largest housing initiative undertaken in the country. The program received 15,164 applications from 23,088 individuals. The scheme aligns with the administration's commitment to providing housing and securing a life of dignity for all citizens.
