Vice President of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb says on the 2nd of July, the Commission would give the newly formed 'The Democrats' the permission to hold its first political gathering.
The party submitted more than the legally required 3,000 membership forms to register the party on the 1st of this month and then applied for permission to hold its first political gathering but was denied by the Commission.
Today, Habeeb said that the Commission decided to give permission to the party to hold its first political gathering when the government re-opens after the Eid Al Adha holidays.
He further said that the Commission has now informed the party's founder and MP for Henveiru Hulhangu Constituency Hassan Latheef of its decision.
The Commission scheduled a meeting to decide on whether or not to give the new party its registration last Wednesday but could not hold the party as only two Commission members were present.
Regulations say that at least 3 members must be present to convene a meeting.
Commission members Ali Nashath and Mohamed Asif have refused to attend meetings while member Dr. Mohamed Zahir is performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
The Democrats have accused the government of exerting its influence over the party's registration process.
