Home Minister Imran Abdullah confirms that in order to further monitor and control criminals, the Police have resumed fitting criminals with ankle bracelets (tags) under court-issued warrants.
This comes after one of the suspects arrested and charged in connection with the murders of reporter Ahmed Rilwan and blogger Yameen Rasheed was freed and then fitted with an ankle tag.
Speaking more about the resumption, Minister Imran said that he did not anticipate the previous administrative error and implementing difficulties this time around.
Imran further said that though the ankle tags are being used under the Terrorism Prevention Act, the government aims to expand its use to monitor and control other types of criminals as well.
He noted that this would also lower the number of criminals locked behind closed doors in prisons.
The previous administrators have also used ankle tags to keep dangerous criminals in line but it stopping fitting them with tags as the police ran out of this ankle-strapped devices.
