The Government revises the disability allowance and introduces additional allowances starting this month.

This comes after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih gave the green light for the revision following a recommendation from his cabinet.

The announcement to increase the allowance was made at a press conference held today at the President's Office.

At the press conference, Gender Ministry said that from June 2023 onwards an allowance of MVR 3,000 would be issued as a disability allowance.

The Ministry said that additional allowances would also be introduced and that three allowances would be issued starting in June.

It said that this includes a care allowance given to those who are unable to live on their own and need care from another as well as a self-care allowance given to those who need other consumables in addition to basic necessities.

The Ministry said that an allowance of MVR 1,000 would also be given to persons with disabilities PWDs who live in households with more than 3 other PWDs.

While the basic PWD allowance has been increased to MVR 3,000, the government would issue MVR 2,000 as Care Allowance while MVR 1000 as Self Care allowance.

The Ministry stated that 11,371 individuals are registered under the National Disability Registry and that government spent MVR 11.22 million on such individuals this year alone.
