The MDP Parliamentary Group votes to remove Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed from the post.
The MDP PG voted to remove Nasheed, who is currently MDP's President, from the Speaker's post at a meeting held today. At the meeting MPD MPs also agreed to begin collecting signatures to submit a no-confidence motion against the former President.
At a press conference held by the MDP Parliamentary Group, PG Leader MP Mohamed Aslam said that the decision to remove Nasheed from the Speaker post was passed with majority backing.
He said that 42 MDP MPs took part in the meeting today and that 36 voted to remove Nasheed from the post.
Aslam said that the parliament's work has been hindered because of the actions of the Speaker and that the MPs are concerned about this issue. He further said that it was decided that the only way forward is to remove Nasheed as Speaker of the Parliament.
Under Parliament regulations, the Speaker of the Parliament and the deputy Speaker of the Parliament can be removed from their posts with majority votes against them by MPs present at a parliamentary session.
While currently there are 87 MPs, in a session in which all the parliamentarians take part, votes from 44 MPs would be needed to remove Nasheed from his post as Speaker of the Parliament.
