The spokesperson for the newly formed 'The Democrats' Afshan Latheef says the party is working to submit its application for registration to the Elections Commission this week.
Currently, the party is working to acquire 3,000 members after it was given the permit to find members by the Commission on the 24th of this month. The Democrats applied for the permit on the 21st of this month.
Speaking to 'The Press', Afshan said that the party's membership drive continues in Male' and the major cities with gusto. She further said that the party has not been able to ascertain the number of membership forms it has received so far.
Afshan said that the party has to process each form manually and that the administrative work is tedious and takes time.
She also said that each form is being manually checked to weed out any mistakes and that the party will continue to be thorough even if it takes time. Afshan added that many are requesting their applications be included in the first 3,000 to be submitted to the Elections Commission as members of the party.
The Democrats is the breakaway faction within the majority ruling party MDP. The faction was formed by MDP President Mohamed Nasheed after he lost the MDP Presidential primary to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih earlier this year.
Several high ranking politicians within MDP have resigned from the party and joined the Democrats but Nasheed remains with MDP yet.
