Male' City Council has begun distributing the coconuts it has received from a private donor amid a scarcity of the nut in the Maldivian market.

The City said that it would be freely distributing the coconuts to those named under the Islamic Ministry Poor and Needy registry until next Sunday.

It also said that after that the Council would be giving away coconuts to any member of the public.

The City Council asked the public to visit its General Service Section on Bodu Thakurufaanu magu between 09:30 am to 1:30 pm and 09:30 pm to 11:30 pm every day except for Fridays.

It also said that members of the Poor and Needy registry must bring their registration cards while others should bring their national identity cards.

Last Thursday, Champa Brothers donated 15,000 coconuts to Male' City Council and it decided to freely distribute the coconuts at its latest formal meeting.

The price of coconuts have soared this Ramadan with a kilo of fruit cum nut costing MVR 80.
