Home Minister Imran Abdullah says police officers have been found to commit certain crimes and several of these officers have been fired from the force.
He said this while speaking at the Parliament today after he was questioned by the MP for Kudahuvadhoo Constituency Ahmed Ameer who noted that there have been rumors that officers were involved in certain crimes and asked the Minister to offer clarification on the matter.
In response, Minister Imran that he knew that Police officers were involved in certain crimes and that these cases have been investigated and action taken against the officers.
He did not reveal how many officers have been fired due to these reasons.
The Minister said that several officers have been demoted because of suspicions about their involvement in the case and several have been transferred to other units to prevent them from being involved in crimes.
He added that there have been no instances where actions have not been taken and that these things are taken seriously within the force.
Imran said that he had even asked island councils to share such concerns about police officers directly with him and asked the Parliamentarians for the same request.
