The Elections Commission has announced that it plans to hold the By-Election for Guraidhoo Constituency on the 15th of April this year.
The Commission made the announcement following the death of the sitting MP for the Constituency Ibrahim Riza.
It did not reveal any other information about the by-election of the Constituency that contains the islands Kaafu Gulhi, Kaafu Maafushi, and Kaafu Guraidhoo.
MP Riza passed last Wednesday in Malaysia after battling cancer. Sources have said that the MP was fighting intestinal cancer.
MP Riza retained the seat of the Guriadhoo Constituency for three terms winning the last election with a ticket from the opposition PPM.
After his death, the opposition coalition described his loss as immeasurable.
In a statement, the PPM coalition sent its condolences to the MP's family as well as the members of the Guraidhoo constituency which contains the islands Kaafu Gulhi, Kaafu Maafushi, and Kaafu Guraidhoo.
The statement further read that MP Riza played a vital role since PPM's inception and that he had worked for the betterment of the party till the end.
It said that he played an important part in the foundation of both DRP as well as PPM.
