Two candidates of the MDP Primary have cast their votes as the fiercest internal elections of a political party kick off across the country.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih cast his vote in the Primary to the Hinnavaru constituency ballot box placed at Iskandar school in Male'.

Speaking to reporters present at the station, President Solih said that he hopes to secure a double-digit victory over his rival. President Solih added that once the election process is completed successfully, the party will begin their work together.

Meanwhile, the President's opponent in the Primary, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has cast his vote in the primary election.

He cast his vote for the Galolhu ballot box placed in Jamaaludheen school.

Nasheed did not speak to the reporters present at the station but said that he would give more information later.

This is the first competitive primary election in the country's largest political party.

While Nasheed competed in Presidential elections in 2008 and 2013, he won the Presidential ticket automatically as no one else competed against him.

President Solih also got his presidential ticket back in 2018 without a primary.
