Security Forces have begun an operation at Maafushi Jail to prevent scams and terrorism-related crimes.
This has been confirmed by both Police and Maldives Correctional Services via Twitter.
They said that authorities have received reports that inmates are planning to carry out scams and terrorism-related crimes by smuggling contraband into the Maafushi jail.
They said that security forces have now begun to search the jail for such items.
Police said that the operation is being conducted upon the request of the Correctional Services and that Maldives National Defence Force MNDF would also be taking part in the operation.
The security forces did not reveal any other information about the operation.
