World-renowned Islamic Scholar Mufti Ismail Moosa Menk says those who suffer mental health alignments like depression and anxiety are fighting them because of weak faith and that those battling such conditions should be encouraged.

He said this while speaking in the public lecture named 'Depression, Anxiety, and Stress', the first of four lectures the scholar would be giving in the Maldives during his trip to the country.

Mufti Menk had also given the Friday sermon at the Islamic Center yesterday.

Addressing a massive crowd at the Carnival area of Male', Mufti Menk said that Allah All Mighty knows best all that relates to mankind and its alignments.

He noted that the Creator has assigned a certain system way for mankind to live their lives and that this includes sleeping in the night and working during the daytime.

Mufti Menk said if individuals were to live by this system, they would defeat half of the difficulties they face during their lives.

The Scholar, with a huge global following, highlighted that if one does not have anything important to do after Isha prayers, one should go to bed and that this was as per the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him.

Mufti Menk said that health experts also back this and if one does not get adequate sleep, one is prone to worry and become anxious about things in life.

On several occasions, the Mufti emphasized that suffering from depression and anxiety has nothing to do with weak faith and that many say that individuals who suffer from such alignments are weak of faith.

Any one of us may face sadness in our lives. Any one of us might be anxious, may not want to get out of our beds, and sometimes it would look like there is no hope. Everyone feels like this sometimes.

Mufti Menk said that such individuals should be encouraged and that they should be given assistance instead of being ridiculed and accused of having weak faith.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, First Lady Madam Fazna Ahmed as well as other government officials attended last night's lecture.

Mufti Menk is scheduled to give three other public lectures in the Maldives including one in Fuvahmulah City tonight. He would be in Addu City tomorrow while he is scheduled to give a public lecture in Hulhumale on Monday.
