Police have brought the body of Abdullah Rasheed of Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo who died while under their custody to Male'.
Police said that the body was brought to Male' midnight last night. It was reported that authorities are planning to perform an autopsy on the body to determine the cause of death.
They said that a man who was taken under Police custody suffered chest pains and showed symptoms of having a fit. Police said that the man was then taken to Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli Health Center but that the man was announced dead on arrival. Police added that this was confirmed by the health center.
Police noted that they have shared the details of the incident with the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission to help them conduct their independent investigations into the matter.
But Police did not divulge why the man was arrested in the first place.
Sources have said that the man was arrested yesterday in an operation carried out by the drug enforcement unit in Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo.
Many gathered outside Madaveli Health Center demanding answers about the suspect's sudden death.
