Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam says he believes residents of Male' should be given priority when issuing land plots from the city just like it would be done anywhere else in the Maldives.

His comments came as many on social media have voiced their anger about the government's decision to award land plots from Male' to its residents.

Speaking more on the issue, Minister Asalam said that there is no reason why residents of Male' should be given priority when releasing land plots from Male' as islanders would be given priority when land is issued from their islands.

Touching on history, Minister Aslam said back in the day, the state would give a land plot to any citizen who has a family and that they could afford to give away land like that back then.

The government thought that at this juncture, it was vital to give land plots to Male' residents as per availability. There are people who are able to afford the construction of their homes and each would try to find their own solutions.

The Minister went on to say that islanders who have lived in Male' for more than 15 years can also apply for the land plots too.

Minister Asalam had also given the details of the housing projects being carried out in the Atolls and said that the government is currently overseeing the construction of 1,520 housing units spanning 14 islands.

He said that with this the next question that would be raised is what would be the plan when the islands reach their maximum population and that this requires many solutions.

Minister Aslam noted that a generic solution would not be enough for this issue as different people have different financial capabilities.
