A fire has been reported in the Stelco powerhouse in Male' today.

The company said that one of the turbos on one of the engines and that the fire had been quickly extinguished. It also said that the company has now begun to investigate what caused the fire in the first place.

Maldives National Defence Force MNDF also confirmed that a fire incident had occurred at the powerhouse and that it was reported at 12:15 pm and was extinguished by 12:26 pm.

This prompted the company's leadership to shower the staff with praise for their quick thinking and action.

Stelco Managing Director Ahmed Shareef said that today's fire was quickly extinguished because of the alertness and quick thinking of Stelco staff.

He further said that Stelco staff are trained for such a scenario and always prepared for such an incident.

Meanwhile, Stelco's chairman Ibrahim Mohamed Didi said in a tweet that today's incident has proven that the fire safety system at the powerhouse had been effective and acted promptly. He added that thankfully a major disaster had been averted today.
