MP for Naifaru Constituency Ahmed Shiyam says the cost of Maldivian Foreign Service is too high.
He said this while speaking during the debate in the parliament today on the report compiled by the parliament's Foreign Relations Committee on appointing ambassadors to different countries.
MP Shiyam said that it is now well known that more is spent on the foreign service than the civil service and an audit should be done on the foreign service.
He further accused that some individuals have been given jobs through the foreign service for being relatives of cabinet ministers and MPs.
While MP Shiyam talked against the Foreign Service, several MPs representing the government had spoken in favor of the service.
MP for Henveiru Dhekunu Constituency Hussain Shameem said that some opposition members had spoken in a manner in which the cost of Foreign Service and the profit gained by the service were confused.
