Speaker of the Parliament and President of MDP Mohamed Nasheed says most MDP members want to hold a public referendum to determine whether to change the governance system.
In a tweet, the former President said that only the public will know what is best for them and that this can only be determined by a public referendum.
Nasheed further said that the majority of MDP members would like to hold such a public referendum to determine whether or not to change the governance system.
He went on to say that no one can refuse to ask the public what they want.
The speaker has been pushing for a system change more intensively in recent days after he had submitted a resolution calling for the change to MDP's congress.
But President Ibrahim Solih has earlier this week asked him to take back the resolution saying that this is not the time for such a major change and the nation should work to resolve the pressing issues in the country right now.
Some Ministers and some MPs belonging to MDP echoed the President's sentiments about the system change.
