Vice President Faisal Naseem says the role of the youth population is essential to overcoming global challenges and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He made these remarks while speaking at the official function held in Kulhudhuffushi City to mark International Youth Day.
Speaking at the official function, the Vice President stated that youth could play a more significant role in overcoming the socio-economic impact of Covid-19, climate change, threats to biodiversity, environmental degradation, and ocean acidification challenges.
He emphasized that the role of youth in overcoming the challenges and achieving the SDGs is crucial all over the world.
Noting that youth make up half the Maldives’ population, the Vice President spoke on the importance of integrating their contributions into every stage of development. He then commended the role of the Maldives’ youth population in combating the Covid-19 pandemic, especially at the Emergency Operations Centre and the national inoculation drive.
He added that the youth population of the Maldives is promising for the future of the country.
The Vice President also launched a video presentation at the ceremony. Catherine Haswell, UN Resident Coordinator in the Maldives; senior officials from the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment; Members of Parliament representing Kulhudhuffushi City; the Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City; and other public officials attended the function.
