Authorities in the Maldives have arrested two foreigners who had attempted to smuggle drugs into the country via air.

Maldives Customs Services said in a statement that the two foreigners who were arrested for attempting smuggling were from the UK and that they had traveled from Ethiopia.

Customs said that both the suspect were 41 years of age.

It also said that both the suspects had attempted to smuggle the narcotics by swallowing bullets filled with drugs and that they were halted and searched at the airport because of suspicious behavior.

Customs said upon the search, it was discovered that both had foreign bodies inside their gastrointestinal tract and that the narcotics may be cocaine.

It said that a total of 220 bullets were found inside both the suspects and that in packing these bullets would weigh 2.33 kg.

Customs also said that the street value for the confiscated narcotics goes up to MVR 8.1 million.

It said that for further investigation, the suspects and the suspected narcotics have now been handed over to the Police.
