Maldives Meteorological Services, the Met Office says more swell wave surges are expected across the country today.

This comes after more than 10 islands sustained across the country sustained damage in the tidal surges caused by severe weather on Friday.

Met Office said that swell wave surges are expected between 02:00 pm and 06:00 pm today. It said that the surges are expected to affect the whole nation.

The National Disaster Management Authority NDMA said today that 12 islands spanning 4 atolls have sustained damage due to the tidal surges combined with the bad weather.

It said that several families on the island of Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli have now been moved to temporary shelters after their houses were severely damaged in the tidal surges and subsequent flooding.

The Authority said that 40 houses on the island of Rathafandhoo of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll also sustained damage.

It said that the airport and residential houses on the island of Thimarafushi in Thaa Atoll sustained damage due to the surges. NDMA said that 30 families on the island were moved to temporary shelters while 1 family is currently under the island council.

The Authority noted that 90 percent of the houses on the island of Thaa Kinbidhoo sustained salt water damages due to the bad weather and storm surges and that 60 percent of the houses on Madifushi of the atoll also reported water damages.

In Thaa Veymandoo, the storm surges damaged the island's sewerage and sanitation system, and the strong winds ripped off the roofs of two houses.

NDMA also said that 4 houses on the island of Thaa Dhiyamigili reported damages due to the bad weather while the islands of Laamu Maavashu, Laamu Maabaidhoo, and Alifu Dhaalu Fenfushi, and Alifu Dhaalu Dhidhoo reported damages.
