Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has questioned whether the government had sought discussions with the council before deciding to rebuild the Galolhu National Stadium in Male'.

This comes after Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof announced that the government plans to demolish the existing stadium and build a new stadium on the ground. The project would be carried out with budge from the Line of Credit given by India and the Youth Ministry had also shared designs of the stadium on Twitter.

Mayor Miuzzu retweeted the Minister's tweet and asked whether the government had asked the residents of Galolhu ward before deciding to rebuild the stadium or whether it had sought consense from the council.

He described the government's inability to discuss such matters with the public as the government is not on good terms with its citizens.

The new stadium can house around 10,000 to 12,000 people.

India had decided to give a loan of USD 40 million to develop the sports sector in the Maldives.
