Maldives Reform Movement MRM has called on the MDP-led coalition government to revise the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act as it pledged during the last presidential election.

MRM said that the coalition government had agreed to abolish the amendments brought to the law by the previous administration back in 2016 as the revisions narrow the freedoms granted by the law.

The party said that the government should act on its pledge as it relates to the citizens and the party had called on the Parliament to hasten the process.

This comes as the Police have cautioned the public against taking part in the anti-India rally organized by the opposition for next Friday.

Police had said that the rally organized by the opposition in Male' tomorrow falls outside of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act and have called on the organizers not to go ahead with the rally.

Police had said that the opposition had planned to bring in many supporters from the islands and use many vehicles during the event and that this would mean traffic congestion in the capital city.

The opposition had said that despite the warnings from Police, it would go ahead with the rally.
