Police say the man who was found drowned in Kaafu Atoll Maafushi had attempted to smuggle contraband into the prison on the island.
Police confirmed that in the incident that occurred in the early hours of last Saturday, prison security had seen a man swim across to the quay wall outside the jail and that the man had jumped back into the sea after he was spotted.
Police said that correction officers had begun to search for the man who jumped and that he was found dead later.
They also identified that man as a 33-year-old local man and said that he was already dead when the man was brought into the island's Health Center.
Police added that the man had been attempting to smuggle smartphones into the jail.
They are further investigating the incident.
