Newly elected MP for Komandoo Constituency Mohamed Rashid has taken the oath of office at a ceremony held today.

MP Rashid took the oath in front of Supreme Court judge Husnu Sood and speaker of the parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

Rashid retained the seat for MDP after he won the by-election held last Saturday.

He secured the seat after winning 48.5 percent of the votes which amounts to 1,401. His closest competitor, Moosa Fathuhee from PPM won 1,161 votes in the election.

Abdul Hannan who competed for Maldives National Party MNP received 11 percent of the votes which amounted to 323 votes.

While 3,309 people were eligible to vote for the by-elections, 2,932 cast their ballots, and out of those 47 turned out to be invalid votes.

The voter turnout for Saturday's election was at 88 percent.

Rashid had acted as the former President of the Shaviyani Foakaidhoo council and would fill the seat for Komandoo til the end of this parliament term.

The Komandoo seat was declared vacant after the former MP Late Hussain Waheed lost his battle with cancer last December.
