MP for Medhu Henveiru Constituency Ali Azim has hinted at axing the Supreme Court Judges who overturned the sentence given to former President Abdullah Yameen by the Criminal Court.
In the preliminary debate on the proposed amendments to the Judge's Act, Azim the ongoings inside a court should always be scrutinized and that the public is dissatisfied with how some judges act.
Azim noted the decision to overturn the sentence against Yameen and described the Supreme Court ruling as an 'astonishing' decision.
The MP highlighted that the Supreme Court should be mindful in releasing someone who has been accused of stealing millions from the state funds and questioned whether such people should even be released from jail.
Azim then went on to hint that the government agencies would meet with the Supreme Court judges behind the decision.
He said that if such decisions were taken when someone who has stolen millions from the state is involved, the public would lose trust and that the public would not want such a person to be released.
The Criminal Court had convicted Yameen of money laundering charges back in 2019 and sentenced him to 5 years in jail. But last November the Supreme Court had overturned the lower court's decision and Yameen was freed.
