President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says the government would open applications for 720 higher education opportunities next Monday.
In his annual address to the Parliament, President Solih said that the government’s Free First Degree Programme has been a success as more than 12,730 students have been given opportunities to enroll in undergraduate studies.
The President said that 2,127 students have already completed their degrees and that by the end of 2023, more than 5,000 students are expected to complete their free degrees and contribute to nation-building.
President Solih said that last year more than 1,500 students that wished to attain higher education overseas received student loans. Those that did not have the financial means and people with special needs were prioritized by the Government.
He added that this Monday, 720 more opportunities will be opened under this scheme.
The President noted that efforts are underway to train Maldivian professionals in various needs-based fields.
He added that in this regard, loans have been granted for 124 students to increase the number of Maldivian doctors.
