Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has submitted a motion at the Parliament's Security Services Committee or 241 Committee in a bid to stop the opposition-led "IndiaOut" campaign.
This comes after the opposition expanded its anti-India campaign to the atolls by carrying out several rallies and activities on different islands across the country. The campaign calls for India to withdraw its troops from Maldivian soil.
While several members of the government coalition have expressed concerns about what the campaign would do to the bilateral relations between the Maldives and its closest ally, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has now appealed to the 241 Committee to put a stop to the activities.
In a letter to the Chair of the Committee and MP of Hithadhoo Uthuru constituency Mohamed Aslam, Nasheed said that the anti-India campaign can be viewed as a threat to national security.
Nasheed went on to say that such acts would be accepted in a civilized society and could work against the best interest of the country. Nasheed also said that the campaign could see the age-old friendship between the Maldives and India wither.
The Opposition had ramped up its anti-India activities after the release of its leader and former President Abdullah Yameen from prison after the Supreme Court had overturned the jail sentence against him last year.
