Progressive Party of the Maldives PPM says its leader and former President Abdullah Yameen would ensure that all citizens would be given employment opportunities under his government.
This comes after Yameen himself that only PPM members would be given government jobs and posts from state-owned companies if he comes in power.
In a statement, PPM voiced concern that the media had misrepresented what the former President had said about jobs during a campaign rally in Male'.
PPM clarified that Yameen had not said that members of other parties would not be given equal employment opportunities under an opposition government.
The Opposition party said that Yameen remains the President who had created a record number of jobs in the country and is exemplary in giving equal opportunities regardless of political background.
It also said that under Yameen's tutelage the country's productivity and economic development had soared to new heights.
PPM's statement follows as many on social media criticized the former leader for his comments about jobs.
Speaking with those from the Komandoo constituency currently living in Male' in a bid to garner more support for the opposition's candidate for the upcoming byelection, Yameen said that if his party came to power, his government would only employ PPM members for posts in the government and state-owned companies and there is no room for others.
He added that he would give priority to those who are now working for PPM as well.
