Health Protection Agency HPA has confirmed more than 500 cases of COVID-19 in the country on Tuesday.

HPA said in its daily COVID update that out of the 5,818 samples tested in the last 24 hours, 593 came back positive for COVID-19. HPA also said that 199 cases were reported from the Greater Male' Area where the positivity rate is now at 7 percent.

The Agency added that 197 cases were reported from the inhabited islands and another 124 new cases were confirmed from the operational resorts.

HPA said that it is yet to determine the location of 73 other cases confirmed on Tuesday.

The new cases have taken the total number of cases reported since March 2020 closer to 100,000 at 99,099.

Meanwhile, the active cases currently in the country had now risen to 4,320 with 20 COVID patients hospitalized for further treatment.

A total of 94,502 people have recovered from the illness while 264 individuals have succumbed to the pandemic since April 2020.

Yesterday, public health officials had confirmed the discovery of the highly-infectious COVID variant Omicron from the capital Male' along with Maafushi island of Kaafu Atoll and Kuda Huvadhoo island of Dhaalu Atoll.

Officials have also confirmed that the omicron variant is now widespread in the community in the capital city.
