President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has commissioned a special task force to fight the drug in the country.

This was announced by the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed who spoke at the ceremony held to burn narcotics seized by the police in different drug operations.

Commissioner Hameed said that work to establish the task force had begun a month ago and that many more measures would be taken next year to save the country's younger generation from the perils of drug abuse.

Speaking at the ceremony, Home Minister Imran Abdullah said the Maldives has become a transit point for major global drug syndicates and that the police are undertaking major operations to disrupt these networks.

Imran added that this however does offer a solution to the local problem of having drug addicts roam around in the country and disrupt social peace and harmony.
