Newly-freed ex-President Abdullah Yameen says the judiciary system must be free of all influence and then only can the country prosper.

The former President was speaking at his first public outing among supporters after the Supreme Court had overturned a money laundering conviction and subsequent jail term given to him by the Criminal Court back in 2019.

Supreme Court hearing of the appeal case by ex-President Yameen

The top court made the decision after Yameen had appealed the lower court's decision in April of this year.

Speaking at the gathering held by the opposition last night, Yameen aimed harsh criticism at the Judiciary and noted that the system is still under major influences.

The ex-President said that the country cannot move forward with a compromised judicial system and the current situation needs to improve.

Yameen said if the judicial system is said to have improved then the law enforcement must speak on the leaked audio clips relating to his case at the Criminal Court.

He noted that it is questionable why the investigation into the matter was delayed.

His comments came as Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed commented on the victorious conclusion to Yameen's appeal case at the top court while speaking on the last episode of Ask the Speaker.

Nasheed said that no former President had been freed by the Supreme Court in such a manner as Yameen had been released and that his confidence in the judicial system has grown.
