The government has issued MVR 421.7 million as an income support allowance for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finance Ministry statistics showed that to date, the government had released MVR 421.1 million as income support allowance to individuals whose jobs were affected by the global pandemic.

The statistics also showed that the government had given these income support allowances to 22,948 individuals.

The income support has been issued in three phases as the government released MVR 48.7 million in the 1st phase. The government had issued MVR 170.6 million in the second phase while it had issued MVR 201.67 million in the third phase.

These allowances are issued under the MVR 2.5 billion economic relief package the government had compiled to compensate for the economic downfall caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government had begun issuing the income support allowance in May 2020 through the National Social Protection Agency. Individuals whose jobs have fallen into peril due to COVID-19 can receive up to MVR 5000 as Income Support Allowance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has rendered many jobless while several have been placed on extended no-pay leaves.
